Relational Degrowth: Book Launch Event – November 4, 2026

You are warmly invited to the launch of Relational Degrowth (Bristol University Press, 2026), a new edited volume that explores how relational perspectives can enrich and transform degrowth thinking and practice.
Book launch – Relational Degrowth

The editors of this anthology—Teppo Eskelinen, Vilma Hämäläinen and Pasi Heikkurinen—ask: What kinds of ontologies and epistemologies should ground humanity’s necessary navigation beyond economic growth? Drawing on diverse philosophical and political traditions and from ecological economics to environmental social sciences, this book offers a bold alternative: relational degrowth, which recognizes people, communities, and nature as fundamentally interconnected.

Through conceptual analysis and real-world examples, the book explores how to reshape economic and cultural systems and demonstrates why emphasis on relations is critical for the degrowth movement. It provides theoretical foundations and practical applications for scholars and activists enacting alternatives to growth-dependent societies.

The publication event will bring together scholars, students, and practitioners interested in sustainability, ecological economics, social change, and the many dimensions of living well within ecological limits. The program will include presentations by the editors and authors, discussion of the book’s key themes, and an opportunity to engage with contributors and fellow participants.
